Twenty people from DR Congo drowned when their boats capsized while crossing the river border with Zambia, where they had gone for a football match, local media reported Tuesday.
The Democratic Republic of Congo nationals were crossing the Luapala, the longest tributary to the Congo river, when their boats were capsized by a passing speed boat late Sunday, the official Zanis news agency reported.
"Their boats were capsized after being hit by waves from a speedboat," Luapula province deputy commissioner Aaron Mushanga told Zanis.
The victims included members of Congolese football team Virgin KA and their supporters who were returning from a game against a Zambian side known as Senegal that took place on the Senga islands.
The boats were carrying more than 100 people but 80 are reported to have been rescued by the owner of the speedboat.
