Some Chinese companies have withdrawn from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) due to the country’s crisis in which refugees are fleeing the rebel-captured city of Goma.

Zhou Mangsheng, a Chinese counselor in the DRC, said Chinese companies have been withdrawn from the country since Nov. 18. Companies, including ZTE, have gone to Uganda and Rwanda to wait for the next move, he said.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also warned Chinese people and agencies on Friday that they should not go to the eastern area of the DRC.

The newly emerging M23 rebel group on Tuesday claimed control of Goma, the capital of the DRC's North Kivu province.

The M23 rebellion started in April when a militia that had been integrated into the DRC armed forces revolted. The militant group has since operated in the eastern part of the country.

According to the business department of the Chinese embassy in the DRC, there are 3,093 people from 43 Chinese agencies including companies, expert groups and medical teams in the country.

Zhao Changhui, chief risk analyst with the National Import and Export Bank, said that the current situation in the DRC is very unfavorable for Chinese companies to expand investment.
