Katanga Mining announces 2012 year end operational highlights, outlook and date for release of 2012 year end financial results

http://news.yahoo.com/katanga-mining-announces-2012-end-130000527.html

Press Release:

Katanga Mining Limited – 15 hrs ago Email ShareTweet Print ZUG, Switzerland , Feb. 11, 2013 /CNW/ - Katanga Mining Limited (TSX: KAT) ("Katanga" or the "Company") today announces 2012 year end production results and date for release of 2012 year end results.

Highlights during the year ended December 31, 2012 , and Outlook On March 29, 2012 , the Company announced that it concluded agreements to secure the development of power supply ("Power Project") for its copper and cobalt mine complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo ("DRC") sufficient to take production to 310,000 tonnes per annum by 2015 as the Updated Phase 4 expansion of Katanga's mineral project ("Updated Phase 4 expansion") is implemented.

On December 13, 2012 , the Company announced the satisfaction of the conditions precedent to draw down from its previously announced $515.5 million senior secured facility between among others, a Company subsidiary, as borrower, the Company and other subsidiaries as guarantors, and the Glencore Group, as the lender. On December 20, 2012 , the Company announced the successful production of the first copper cathodes from the newly commissioned facilities as part of the Updated Phase 4 Expansion programme. The new facilities include the first Solvent Extraction ("SX") train with an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes of copper and the first 144 Electro-Winning ("EW") cells with an annual capacity of 40,000 tonnes of copper.

In addition, the Company announced that the new convertor, as part of the World Bank power project, and the new synchronous condenser, as part of the refurbishment of the DRC's power systems, were commissioned and in use as of December 17 , 2012.

This equipment helps to increase and stabilise power capacity in the region. With the installed convertor and synchronous condenser, the DRC electricity provider, La Société Nationale d'Electricité ("SNEL") is in a position to increase electricity transmission from the Inga power plant, therefore improving the reliability of supply to the Company's operations.

Mining During 2012, the Company mined 5,544,701 tonnes of ore (a 22% increase over 2011) at a grade of 4.12% resulting in contained copper in ore mined of 228,606 tonnes. Ore mined and hoisted at KTO Underground Mine during 2012 was a record 1,838,616 tonnes, a 14% increase over 2011.

The average copper grade of ore mined from KTO Underground Mine during 2012 was 3.60%. Ore mined at KOV Open Pit during 2012 was a record 3,706,085 tonnes, a 47% increase over 2011. The average copper grade of ore mined from KOV Open Pit during 2012 was 4.38%.

The Kamoto East Pit was dewatered with 6.6 million cubic metres of water having been removed. The Kamoto East Pit dewatering allows for more efficient and cost effective waste management and the potential development of the Kamoto East mineral resource using underground mining methods. Processing Ore milled at the Kamoto Concentrator ("KTC") during 2012 was a production record of 4,612,328 tonnes, an increase of 13% compared to 2011.

Notwithstanding the power availability issues detailed below, copper produced in metal and concentrate for 2012 totalled a production record of 92,963 tonnes, an increase of 2% compared to 2011. Cobalt produced totalled 2,129 tonnes for 2012, a decrease of 13% compared to 2011.

Copper and cobalt production continued to be adversely affected by recurrent general power disruptions in the DRC. During 2012, approximately 1,609 production hours were lost across the operation due to power disruptions, of which 421 hours were lost in Q4 2012.

This amounts to approximately 67 days of lost production and includes the time from the power disruption until equipment is operating at pre-power disruption capacity. The lost production time excludes the adverse impact on equipment availability due to the unplanned shut downs and subsequent start ups of the equipment due to the power disruptions.

With the commissioning in mid-December 2012 of the World Bank convertor and the Power Project synchronous condenser, power disruptions have decreased. In the medium to long term, improvements in infrastructure as a result of the Power Project are expected to improve the reliability and stability of electricity supplies generally. Outlook Mechanical completion of the Updated Phase 4 Expansion is expected in the third quarter of 2013 which will enable Katanga to both increase total processing capacity as well as upgrade the quality of copper produced through the application of modern technologies.

The first phase of the feasibility study for the potential T17 underground mine is expected to be completed during the second quarter of 2013.

This will potentially allow for the exploitation of additional T17 mineral resources below the bottom of the current open pit using underground mining techniques. The Company will release its 2012 year-end financial results at market open on or about February 13, 2013 .

DRC rebel ringleader arrested in Cape Town 10 FEB 2013 15:23 - SAPA

http://mg.co.za/article/2013-02-10-drc-rebel-ringleader-arrested-in-cape-town/

The kingpin behind the plot to overthrow Democratic Republic of the Congo President Joseph Kabila has been arrested in Cape Town, says the Hawks. OUR COVERAGE Congo dissidents 'stung' by Hawks 19 suspected DRC rebels arrested in Pretoria

"We've arrested the man who was the ringleader in the plot to overthrow DRC president. He was arrested in Cape Town on Friday and we are making arrangements for him to be moved to Pretoria where he will be charged with the same charges the other 19 men are facing," said Captain Paul Ramoloko.

On Friday, police said they were still searching for two men who were part of a group accused of plotting to overthrow Kabila. A group of 19 alleged rebels from the DRC, which included a United States citizen, appeared in the Pretoria Regional Court on Thursday to face charges under the Foreign Military Assistance Act.

The group was arrested in South Africa's northern Limpopo province on suspicion of running an illegal military operation after an investigation by a crime intelligence unit. A separate law enforcement official said they were members of the M23 rebels that carved out a fiefdom in eastern DRC's North Kivu province, dragging the region back into war and displacing an estimated half a million people.

The M23 rebels, a group of army mutineers who launched their offensive after accusing DRC President Joseph Kabila of reneging on the terms of a March 2009 peace agreement, have since broadened their goals to include removal of Kabila and "liberation" of the country. The men were not asked to enter pleas and were ordered to return to court on February 14.

The DRC was recently attacked by militants thought to have the backing of neighbouring Rwanda. The DRC's mineral-rich east has been unstable and often engulfed by fighting since a 1994 genocide in Rwanda. The ring leader would appear in the Pretoria Regional Court next week. – Sapa

China passes U.S. to become world's biggest trading nation
Bloomberg News | February 9, 2013

http://www.chron.com/business/article/China-passes-U-S-to-become-world-s-biggest-4265793.php

China surpassed the U.S. to become the world's biggest trading nation last year as measured by the sum of exports and imports, a milestone in the Asian nation's challenge to the U.S. dominance in global commerce that emerged after the end of World War II in 1945.

U.S. exports and imports last year totaled $3.82 trillion, the U.S. Commerce Department said last week. China's customs administration reported last month that the country's total trade in 2012 amounted to $3.87 trillion. China had a $231.1 billion annual trade surplus while the U.S. had a trade deficit of $727.9 billion.

China's emergence as the biggest global trading nation gives it increasing influence, threatening to disrupt regional trading blocs as it becomes the most important commercial partner for countries including Germany, which will export twice as much to China by the end of the decade as it does to neighboring France, said Goldman Sachs Group's Jim O'Neill.

China became the world's biggest exporter in 2009, while the U.S. remains the biggest importer, taking in $2.28 trillion in goods last year compared with China's $1.82 trillion of imports.

Still, the U.S. economy is more than double the size of China's, according to the World Bank. In 2011, the U.S. gross domestic product reached $15 trillion while China's totaled $7.3 trillion.

Nord Kivu: SADC peace force has 'mandate to fight Congo rebels'
http://za.news.yahoo.com/african-peace-force-mandate-fight-congo-rebels-103730878.html

Southern African leaders have agreed to allow a 4,000-strong regional peacekeeping force to engage directly with rebels fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo, officials said.

A regional peacekeeping force will be able to combat "whoever is trying to destabilise the situation in the eastern part of Congo," the Southern African Development Community (SADC) secretary general Tomaz Salomao told AFP after a regional meeting late on Friday.

No deployment date has been fixed.

In an extraordinary summit in the Mozambique capital Maputo, leaders of the 14-member bloc decided on a separate command structure and rules of engagement for the force, though it would nominally fall under the United Nations.

The force still needs UN Security Council clearance.

"If we do not have this mandate we will be creating the impression we are invading," said Salomao.

Logistical issues such as repatriating injured or killed troops still need to be finalised, he added.

South Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Tanzania have already pledged troops for the regional force.

Tanzania President Jakaya Kikwete hailed the decision reached at the summit, also attended by DR Congo President Joseph Kabila, saying it would lead to "a better situation in the Congo".

"It is a big leap forward for peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo," said Kikwete, who heads the SADC's security wing.

Regional groupings have been trying since July to set up a neutral international force to break up the numerous militia groups that prey on civilians in eastern DR Congo.

But African leaders wanted assurances any peacekeepers they send will have the mandate to engage the rebels rather than simply enforcing peace as under the current UN mandate, diplomatic sources told AFP earlier.

The 17,000-strong force of the UN mission in DR Congo (MONUSCO) operates under a limited mandate that only allows it to protect civilians, not engage directly with rebel forces.

During the sacking of the key Dr Congo city of Goma in November by rebels from the Movement of March 23 (M23), UN peacekeepers were unable to step in and stop their advance.

Kabila's government and M23 rebels have been holding peace talks in the Ugandan capital Kampala.

The negotiations in Kampala are the latest in several bids to end a long-running conflict that has forced hundreds of thousands of people in eastern DR Congo from their homes.
